Finger Paints: Twisted (Flakie!!! Over Black)

TGIF! I know this will be my third post of the day but those were press releases and tags so I fell like some nail polish porn is needed to even it out :-)

The other day I was near one of the better Sally Beauty Supplies in my area and I hit the jackpot. They had all the new flakies (I only picked up the three I was interested in, Twisted, Asylum and Motley). I was lucky because they only had one of each of the ones I wanted! Score!!! Then on the clearence table they had two Orly's I have been looking for Androgynie and Rock Solid! It was a good shopping day! 

I had to try Twisted  right away! I ran home and layered it over black. It looks amazing over black. It's a multicolored flakie. It's perfection! I am so happy with it. I think it will look amazing over any dark polish! It has red, orange, blue, purple and green flakies to my eye. I just love it. I used two  coats over one coat of a basic black creme:

Do you love this one as  much as I do? It's so pretty! I paid $5.99 each for them at Sally Beauty Supply. I am so happy because my Sally's never has the good stuff.

Nina Ultra Pro: Salsa

Happy Monday readers!  I hope all is well in your neck of the woods and that you had a great weekend. My weekend was nice, hubby and I had dinner at his brother's house with my parents (LOL which sounds odd but it was nice) on Saturday. Then on Sunday we didn't do much but I snagged a nice deal at Big Lots. They had a 6 foot Christmas tree with lights for $20! Wow! I needed a bigger one, I have too many ornaments for the 4.5 footer we had. I am so excited I want to put it up NOW!

Well, on to the polish...

 

Every once in a while Sally's has some fabulous selections on clearance and this time I was lucky enough to find the exact polish I had been lusting after for weeks on the clearance table! I was so excited to get this baby for $1.99 and it was the last one! SCORE!

 

This is Nina Ultra Pro's Salsa and I guess it's a tomatillo salsa because this baby is GREEN! Bright, beautiful Crayola crayon green.  It's the perfect shade of green if you ask me. Sure it's not smoky or neon but when I think of plain ol' green this is it! 

 

This is a creme formula and it dries super shiny just the way I like it. This is the only Nina Ultra Pro polish I own (because most of the colors are frosty) but I am impressed with the formula on this. It was a great consistency and application was a breeze. I got full opacity with 2 coats and didn't have any issues with the brush or anything.  Overall this polish is a winner for me! I love it!

Finger Paints: Gallery Glam

Hi everyone! I hope you're all well. My ankle is feeling a little better but it's still not 100%. I stayed home from "work" today in order to rest it and hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Today I wanted to share a color from Finger Paints that I bought a while ago when they had a buy 2 get one free sale. This is Gallery Glam.

Gallery Glam is a smokey dark blue shimmer. The shimmer is subtle but adds depth and interest to this color. It's not as sparkly as China Glaze's Midnight Mission but it's pretty nonetheless! I love it. The shimmer in this one seems to be the same color as the polish so it doesn't contrast as much as Midnight Mission's silver shimmer.

The formula on this one is great. It applied nicely and I didn't have any issues with thickness. I have had trouble in the past with some Finger Paints but not lately. I think I just had a dud once that's all. I love this one.

Finger Paints "Tough Art to Follow

Hello gorgeous! Thanks for reading today! Hope your week started out well and continues on that path. Today I have a gorgeous green from Finger Paints to share with you all.

This is Tough Art to Follow. It's sort of a blackened army green with a high shine creme finish. It's got a jelly-ish quality but opacity is achieved in 2 coats, it just seems squishy.

The formula on this is great. I had no problems with application, no streaking and just slight balding on the first layer - easily corrected with the 2nd layer. Overall good quality for the price.

Fingers Paints can be purchased at Sally Beauty Supply for around $4.49 each. Right now they have a Buy 2 Get 1 free sale so you can get 3 colors for around $10. Not bad at all.

Finger Paints "Watermelon Watercolor"

Happy Monday readers! I hope all is well. This week may be a big a big week for my family. My husband's older brother and his wife are expecting their first child any day now. My sister in law is due on the 21st (TODAY!!!) so we're likely to meet our first nephew sometime this week. Please keep everyone in your thoughts and wish for an easy delivery and a healthy baby!

Today I have a hot pink to share with you from Finger Paints. This is Watermelon Watercolor. Doesn't the name scream summer to you?!

Watermelon Watercolor is a classic hot pink creme. In the bottle I love it but on my nails I am not a huge fan. It's just me though, something in my skin tone doesn't get along with this color. I guess it also doesn't really go with clothes I normally wear either.

The formula on this is fantastic! I haven't had the best luck with Finger Paints but this one is great to me. It applies smoothly, isn't too thick and has nice high gloss finish. I think you'd all be impressed by the formula on this one.

Finger Paints "Scenery Greenery"

Happy Monday my friends! Thanks for checking in today!!!! I have a fun green to share with you today. Since I cannot find Essie's Pretty Edgy ANYWHERE I am trying to fulfill my longing for a good green but I doubt anything will be as perfect as that one. The search continues...

So I picked up Scenery Greenery by Finger Paints a few weeks ago at Sally Beauty Supply. It's a great dark forest green creme. It's almost black but not quite, I have a few other dark greens which are even closer to black than this one so this one is a nice middle of the road dark green.

I will do a comprehensive green comparison at some point, maybe once I find Pretty Edgy but until then I did take a photo of the bottle compared to OPI's Jade is the New Black so you can get an idea of the tone.


The formula kind of sucks. It's super thick and gets pretty goopy around the rim of the bottle and on the brush. It can be difficult to work with as you put the initial glob of color on your nail and it is so thick it sort of just goops up before you can spread it out. I was able to make it look decent with a lot of clean up and a good topcoat. I just wish the formula was a little better.

China Glaze: "Atlantis" and Glitter Removal.

China Glaze's "Atlantis" is a stunning turquoise jelly with amazing holographic rainbow glitter particles. This color is part of the specialty glitters and cremes collection. I am not sure if these are permanent or will be limited edition but currently it is still for sale on Trans Design. I almost skipped this one but I am so glad I didn't because it's really as beautiful as everyone says!

The formula is easy to work with. The base is a squishy turquoise jelly that applies well. I used three coats for opacity and I think it was enough. I used two coats of Seche Vite Top coat in order to smooth out the chunky glitter. Without the top coat this will be a pretty rough texture.

When the light hits the glitter in this polish it's one of the most gorgeous things. The glitter flashes all of the colors of the rainbow. It was difficult to capture that in photos but I took some out of focus ones to show it:

I find glitters to chip significantly faster than most other polish formulas but this one did not. I wore it for almost 5 days (that's how pretty it is) and had minor tip wear but no significant chunks were missing.

I am very impressed with this polish and glad I thought twice before passing it up. I think it's one of the best glitter polishes in my collection.

Glitter removal can be a pain but I was able to remove this without breaking a sweat using the foil method I have seen on other polish bloggers blogs. Just soak a cotton round in polish remover, place a round on each nail and wrap the nail and cotton with foil. Let stand for about 3-4 minutes. Apply slight pressure on the nail when removing the cotton and foil and you should have a fairly clean nail when finished. Much better than using 1/2 bottle of remover and a bag of cotton rounds.

I love this method! Whoever thought of it, thank you!!! There's very minimal cleanup required after it, just a teeny bit of stray polish. Try it next time you rock the glitter. Don't let glitter removal keep you from wearing your favorite glitter polishes.

China Glaze: Sci-Fi

China Glaze's "Sci-Fi" is part of the Khrome Collection and it's a fantastic metallic silver color. It has an almost aluminum foil quality to it in that it is incredibly shiny. I don't normally go for colors like this because I tend to favor creme formulas but this one actually worked out very nicely on my nails.

I think you should absolutely use a ridge filling base coat like Beauty Secrets Ridge Filler when wearing metallics because the texture of these polishes tend to emphasize any imperfections in the nail bed and will only drive you mad if you're a manicure perfectionist. A good ridge filling base will help a metallic polish go on more smoothly and the end result will be much more pleasing to the eye.


This polish applied nicely (over my ridge filler) and I used just two coats. It was opaque in just one coat but I like to use two to fix up any sloppy application. The consistency of this polish is thin but pigmented. It's almost like molten metal. It was a rather easy to work with polish and I have a love for China Glaze's brushes so that helped.

Metallic polishes also work well with Konad stamping. Now me and Konad do not get along so I tend not to even bother trying (what a waste of $ that was on my part) but many people tend to have success with Khrome polishes and Konad.

A Quick Comparison

The only other silver I have in my collection is Orly's "Silver Mine". I could have sworn I had a Pure Ice Silver color from years ago but I must have thrown it away. Oh well. I thought I'd show you some side by side pics of the two colors. They're very similar and pretty much the same consistency, with the Orly being maybe just a tiny but thinner. The China Glaze is slightly, very slightly darker.

Orly "Pure Petunia" from the Spring I 2010 Bloom Collection

Good afternoon readers. Today I have a great purple/mauve color to share with you. Please excuse the condition of my nails. While I was away the poor things were pretty neglected and I suffered a few breaks. Nothing that won't be back to normal soon though.

Orly's "Pure Petunia" is a pretty creme mauvey/magenta-esque purple which is part of the Orly Bloom Spring I 2010 collection. The polish is on the thick side and super pigmented. Nearly opaque at one coat but I did two in order to smooth out my application. Application was pretty easy with this polish, I found it easy to work with. Orly has a thin brush which you either love or hate; I love it.

I think this is a nice color for spring. I feel like it is also work appropriate and even suitable for a job interview. I know sometimes I struggle with what polish to wear on an interview (I just finished law school and I am trying to snag my first job as an attorney so no ne and I think this one is a suitable choice. It's not ultra-conservative but it is not too bold either.

Orly "Snowcone": Spring II 2010 Sweet Collection

"Snowcone" by Orly is part of the Spring II 2010 Sweet Collection. This collection will be available in April 2010. "Snowcone" is described as a "baby blue creme" which is pretty accurate. I'd call it "Cornflower Blue" if I wanted to be fancy about it. These photos were taken indoors because we had horrible rain yesterday, but they are pretty accurate color wise.


The formula on this color is thick and pigmented. It is actually opaque in just one coat but I applied two to even out my mistakes. Someone with a better application technique will absolutely be able to get away with one coat with no visible nail line.

The polishes in the sweet line come with a free mini key chain lip gloss as well. This one came with a blue frosty one. I think the flavor/scent is supposed to be blueberry snow-cone but to me this smells exactly like red Twizzlers, which is a great fun smell. As for flavor I don't get much. The color of the gloss is pretty much clear with a tenny hit of blue, but you don't have blue lips or anything LOL. Just a glossy, sparkly frost.

I think this is a nice blue for spring. I love a Robin's Egg, pastel style blue around Easter time. Will you be checking "Snowcone" out when it hits stores in April?
