Pure Ice: Eyes of Steel, Lightening Strikes & Silver Mercedes

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I have some colors from the Pure Ice Five Shades of Grey collection to share with you.  These are losely based on the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomena. Have any of you read the books? I got sucked in by co-workers but I am only on book 2 because I am a little bored with it. Oh well!!!

First up I have the color Eyes of Steel topped with Lightening Strikes Crackle.  I am not the hugest fan of crackle, I am so over it but for some reason I felt like wearing this combo and actually left it on for three days! It's just a regular silver crackle.  Eyes of Steel is a dark charcoal frost color that you can barely see when the crackle is on top. It's a true frost finish so that means sort of streaky and unruly.

Next up is Silver Mercedes which is a light silver frost. I only needed one coat for the opacity shown below so that's pretty cool.  The color is a frost and can lead to streaking if you don't watch out but I think it came out pretty decent with just one coat. What do you think?

I am not a huge fan of frosts or crackles so these didn't get me too excited. I do however enjoy Pure Ice lacquers and I enjoy their price even more. Pure Ice is found at Walmart and last I checked they were like $2.50 so you can't go wrong. Some of my favorite polishes are from Pure Ice, these just aren't among them. They're not bad, just not for me.  The crackle worked well and had a nice design and the one coat opacity is always a great thing, I just don't rock silver or frost often enough to call these favs.

Have you tried the Pure Ice brand? What are some of your favorite Pure Ice colors? I have Pure Ice at my Walmart stores but their selection has gone down a lot over the years, they used to carry so many colors, now just a handful. I have also seen Pure Ice at Walgreens.

Have a great day!

Pure Ice: FIVE Shades of Grey (Press Release)

I received this press release in my inbox today so I thought I would share. This is a cute take on the Fifty Shades of Grey craze. Who's reading the scandalous books? I couldn't resist the hype when everyone at work started reading them so I am currently on book two.

Pure Ice offers you the FIVE shades of Grey.
When you are not busy enthralled in the world of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, take a break and do your nails.

Dark, charcoal gray carries with it some of the strength and mystery of black. It is a sophisticated color without much of the negative attributes of black.

Pure Ice "Free Spirit"

Happy Monday readers!!! Today I have a GORGEOUS mint green for you all. I am not totally on top of trends but I think these baby/pastel mints are still on trend and this is a fantastic one and it's only $2.00-$2.50 and readily available at Walmart. Yay!

This is Pure Ice's Free Spirit. It's the most beautiful mint green creme. I love the color. It's a bit more green than China Glaze's Re-fresh Mint. Re-Fresh Mint is more of a true pastel with more white in it than this one.

The formula is perfection. I am always so impressed with the quality of these polishes. Pure Ice is inexpensive but not cheap! The formula is infinitely better than Re-Fresh Mint. It was opaque in two coats and the finish was smooth with no streaks. I find Pure Ice to be pretty long wearing as well.

I think if you're still digging mint greens you should wander over to the cosmetics section next time you're in Walmart. I don't think this color will disappoint you.

Note: Like other Pure Ice colors (see Taupe Drawer post here) there is another color in the collection called Free Spirit and it is in fact green. However it is different. It has a shimmer to it and it's a brighter green. I am not sure if one of them is old and one of them is new. I don't really know why Pure Ice does this. I should have picked up the other one for comparison purposes as it's only $2 but $2 is $2 and I wasn't feeling the color so I didn't get it. But just a heads up in case you happen to see Free Spirit and wonder what the heck I was talking about it being mint green!

Pure Ice "Platinum"

Hi readers! Today I have a cheap but good one for you. Pure Ice is a really great brand sold at Walmart for just $2 a bottle. I have had good luck with Pure Ice polishes, I find them to be really high quality for the price.

This is Pure Ice "Platinum" which is a silvery/white/pearl frost polish. Color wise I have to say this is more silver on my nails than it appears in the bottle. I thought that this was going to be more of a white frost but it's pretty silver which was sort of a bummer.

The formula on this was easy to work with and opaque in just 2 coats. I am always impressed with the formula of this brand. I am not huge on frost formulas but every once in a while I wear one. I don't like the streaks that are inevitable with frost but this was bearable.

What's your favorite color from Pure Ice?

Color Club: Gossip Column

Color Club's "Gossip Column" is a medium toned blue creme from the Rebel Debutante collection. It's actually a pretty unique shade of blue in my opinion. (See some basic comparisons below). It's slighty "dusty" which is a quality I like in colors.

The formula of this polish is fantastic. It's SUPER pigmented and if you're precise with application I think you can totally get opaque coverage in one coat. I used two coats to even out my application. Being that it's so pigmented it's on the thick side so it can be slightly tricky to work with but if you're a careful polisher you'll be fine, I didn't find it frustrating at all.

Just to compare the colors a bit. The Pure Ice color is a true royal blue and the China Glaze shade leans toward Aqua. I just wanted to show you where on the spectrum "Gossip Column" lies. Hope this helps.

So are you a fan of blue nails? I am! My husband always likes them too for some reason. What do you think about "Gossip Column"?

Pure Ice "Taupe Drawer" Two Colors, One Name

Two polishes, the same name, completely different colors. Both of these colors are from Pure Ice (available at Walmart for just $2 each), and both are named "Taupe Drawer". I thought it would be nice to give you all a comparison photo so you can see the extreme difference between the two versions.

I love both colors they're gorgeous! One is a light neutral pink color that I think is perfect for the office, job interviews or any other situation where conservative is the norm. The other is a really pretty purple/blackberry-ish color. Neither is taupe to me but "Taupe Drawer" is the name of both.

Both, in my opinion, are extremely high quality formulas. I love how these apply. Smooth, no streaks and opaque enough in just two coats. For $2 it amazes me that these are some of my favorite polishes, they're really a pleasure to apply.

I know I have seen the darker version, 966, in stores recently, but I cannot recall if I have seen the lighter pink, 920CP, in stores. I will have to check next time I make my way to Walmart.

I do hope this post helps those of you who thought they might have seen two versions of the same color. You're not crazy, you did!!!

920CP is on the ring and pinky fingers, and 966 is on the pointer and middle fingers. As always click photos to enlarge.

Sephora by OPI: "Metro Chic"

Sephora by OPI's Metro Chic has become a bit of a recent cult classic. Everyone has been looking for the perfect mushroommy/taupy/grayed out shade for their nails and Metro Chic has been a favorite among nail enthusiasts.

Metro Chic retails for $9 at Sephora stores and at Sephora.com. The application is great. The formula is not too thin, not too thick and I didn't get any irritating streaks. I used a base coat, two coats of the polish and a top coat for shine.

Now Metro Chic is a taupy/mushroom/smoky purple color... or so I thought. I thought, from swatches I'd seen on the web, that this was going to lean a bit purple and be one of those nice chameleon shades that always confuse onlookers. Unfortunately on me this leans much more gray and it's MUCH darker IMO than any of the swatches I have seen on the internet, which was a bit of a dissappointment. I feel that my swatches are accurate and while they do in fact look much different from other swatches on the web I see exactly what I see on screen when I look at my nails. I am not sure if my topcoat darkened the polish or what but in the bottle it's that wonderful smoky purple and on my nails it's a blackened gray without much uniqueness. Humph!

Swatches done outside against a fresh snow background LOL:

This is an in bottle comparison of "Metro Chic" and "You Don't Know Jacques!"

And here is a comparison of the grays/taupes in my collection: (sorry for the glare)

Now, the Pure Ice color is a true gray, and as you can see "Metro Chic" is pretty close in color. The Orly color is my "Holy Grail" Taupe/Mushroom. That color is fantastic! It does what I wanted "Metro Chic" to do, it confuses the eye, looks purple/mauve one second then tan the next, it's wonderful.

Does "Metro Chic" live up to the hype? Not really. You certainly don't need both "Metro Chic" and "You Don't Know Jacques!". The formula is nice though, the price is okay, and overall it's a nice polish.

Have you tried "Metro Chic"? What do you think!?Pin It Now!
